The Future of Neurodiverse Communities in North America

This 1.5-hour foundational workshop explores the vision and practical steps to creating a neurodivergent cohousing community. Participants will learn about the "why"—the importance of fostering inclusive housing that fosters acceptance, purpose, appreciation and therefore happiness —and the "how"—key strategies to start organizing a neurodivergent community initiative in your state and town.

This course is for all: advocates, legislators, non-profit staff, housing developers, municipal employees, architects, planners, designers, grassroots organizers, activists, urban volunteers, and all good citizens interested in taking action on this topic.

By connecting with the philosophy and practices of neurodiverse communities, advocates can create more inclusive, supportive, and well-rounded environments that benefit students, parents, and the wider community.

By the end of this class, participants will acquire a foundational understanding of how to create sustainable communities that prioritize inclusivity and actively support neurodivergent individuals driving a more inclusive future across North America.

This introductory session sets the stage for the six-part Neurodivergent Community Living: Cohousing Workshop Series which dives deeper into the process and challenges ahead. Learn more and register for the Six-Part workshop series HERE.

It is highly recommended to read the book, One Life, Live It! before this workshop to really have a thorough idea of what the workshop will be about and answer any questions.  The book can be purchased HERE.

Take Part in Designing a New Cohousing Community in Port Townsend, WA!

Are you interested in living in a cohousing community in Washington state? Join Newt Crossing in Port Townsend, WA for their Common House Programming & Design Workshop on the weekend of July 20-21, facilitated by The Cohousing Company. For questions and to register, contact: newt@olympus.net

A note from architect Chuck Durrett:

“This Common House Workshop itself is simply the greatest community building experience of them all. It is where we learn up close and personal who we are individually, collectively, and from a cooperative point of view, who we want to be, what our common values really are, and our common potential and how to best realize them. Exactly where and how we make a community that makes our individual lives more convenient, more practical, more economical, more healthy, more safe, more social, more interesting, and more fun. If we’re very focused, we will make the common facilities that do just that – actually reach our collective potential and goals like living lighter on the planet.

This workshop is where we build the common realm, not brick by brick, but decision by decision. Don’t miss it!”

Charles Durrett to Present on Community Therapy & a Forming Neuro-Inclusive Cohousing Community in Grass Valley, CA

Hosted By: EnGaged Services, a Nevada County California organization who focuses on building inclusive community by empowering those with special needs and their families.

Paul Platner, Independent Facilitator and Co-Founder of EnGaged Services, says there’s a huge need for a neuro-inclusive community here in Nevada County, CA. “Sure, there are expensive places where we can send our family members to live, but there aren’t a lot of places where families can live together in community.”

With discussions on art and music therapy, horse therapy, gardening/cooking therapy, and community therapy, it’s sure to be an inspiring event. During Chuck’s Presentation, he will describe his trip to Sólheimar Ecovillage, a neuro-inclusive community in Iceland, as well as his new book about it, One Life, Live It! He will also talk about how to find a site in Grass Valley, CA that will have potential to be a neuro-inclusive cohousing community for families and their loved ones with disabilities.

Grassroots Organizing: How to Get Your Cohousing Project Launched

3-hour LIVE Online Workshop / $125
Friday March 15, 2024
9:00 am (Pacific Time) / 12:00 pm (Eastern Time)

Description

Organizing is the long-lost art of working with people to make things happen locally. At this juncture, where national governments are debilitated by division and divisiveness, we need to work at the neighborhood level to get things done.

In essence, the formula is about initiative – who do I have to talk to today? You wake up and figure out what is the next step to move the project forward.

This course will mainly focus on the proven methods for grassroots organizing in creating cohousing communities, though other examples will be included as well. Grassroots Community Organizers are necessary out there, whether it is getting a new cohousing community built, or a new clinic, store, or school all made locally.

More cohousing communities have been started by the Getting-It-Built Workshop than by any other method in North America.

We will cover a number of topics, including: group process and membership, the development process, finding a site, the participatory design workshop process, putting together a professional team, working through city approvals, financial and ownership options, saving money, staying on track and on budget, and overall how to design a high-functioning community.

We will also be hearing from others about their successes and challenges, and will have breakouts for you to reflect on how to engage in advocacy on both a local and national level.

Learning Objectives

  1. Success stories of municipal approval for cohousing

  2. Risks of cohousing being misappropriated by developers

  3. Next steps for building local support for cohousing

Designing Community-Enhanced Neighborhoods: The Architecture of Cohousing
An Antioch University Professional Development Certificate With Charles Durrett, AIA

With this class, Charles Durrett will impart his wisdom and knowledge from designing over 55 cohousing communities in North America (and probably more than anyone in the world) to give every cohousing designer a leg up if you’re going to design a new cohousing community and want a high-quality, high-functioning cohousing community.

LIVE Webinar Series / 4-weeks / $250
Thursdays November 2, 9, 16, & 30, 2023
9:30 am - 11:30 am (Pacific Time) / 12:30 pm - 2:20 pm (Eastern Time)

In North America, too many cohousing projects fall short of the potential of a healthy community that fires on all cylinders. This can be due to many factors, from as big as the site plan of the whole community to seemingly small but key details that provide the right acoustics either between the houses or to prevent too much noise in the common house.

This class will also be utilizing his latest book, Cohousing Community: Designing for High-Functioning Neighborhood, as the main text of the class. This book is chock-full of more than 100 case studies, and all of the lessons learned from the good ones—giving readers a perfect point of departure and setting them up for success when they create their own communities, while still leaving it up to the creativity of the designer and their ability to understand the subculture of the group.

These are very efficient designs, but more importantly an efficient process, creating buy-in both financially and emotionally. Architects have designed these excellent environments efficiently and made a living. Architects have muddled without these tools and lived, but went bankrupt, because the process took too long, or they got sued, or both. At 55 cohousing projects, we have designed cohousing longer than all else in North America. We’ve certainly learned how to get it done—that’s what we are sharing with this class.

We live in cohousing. We hear from our neighbors what works and doesn’t all the time, and we will share that with this class. We hear from the residents who live in all of the 55 cohousing that we have designed. We are in contact with them all of the time, so we can ensure that their cohousing communities are sustainably high functioning.

If you’re going to do a cohousing—do it right, and this class will give you the tools to do so.

VIA the Danish Social and Housing Agency:

BUILD, Bofællesskab.dk and the Social and Housing Agency invite you to a walk-in meeting with Charles Durrett about the development of shared housing in the USA and Denmark.

Charles Durrett came to Denmark in the 80s to study housing communities. He lived in Bofællesskabet Trudeslund. It laid the seed for the development of the 'co-housing' movement in the USA and for a long series of books. Now Charles Durrett is visiting Denmark again in connection with the publication of his new book, Cohousing Communities: Designing for High-Functioning Communities.

We would like to take the opportunity to invite Charles Durrett and John Vagn from Trudeslund together with Danish researchers and practitioners to give a historical sketch of the housing movement in Denmark - and the inspiration for the USA.

We hope that the go-home meeting can partly create insight into how Denmark has inspired the US's housing communities; provide a common, historical outline and frame of reference for the development, and in addition bring together the network of actors with an interest in housing communities.

An Antioch University Professional Development Certificate
With Charles Durrett, Architect Emeritus AIA

With this class, Charles Durrett will impart his wisdom and knowledge from designing over 55 cohousing communities in North America (and probably more than anyone in the world) to give every cohousing designer a leg up if you’re going to design a new cohousing community and want a high-quality, high-functioning cohousing community.

LIVE Webinar Series / 4-weeks / $250
Wednesdays June 7 - 28, 2023
